A subject that has a large amount of debate. Engineers saying you don't need to master for vinyl, others suggesting that you do.
You don't need to master for vinyl, but you do need to tailor the master!
A few, but very important changes have to be made to your track when creating a master for vinyl.
The process normally involves:
- Signal converted to mono up to around 100Hz;
- Possible attenuation to frequencies above 6kHz;
- Frequencies higher then 16kHz are filtered out;
- Possible de-essing
